The Ladies Book of Haiku

This is, as it suggests, a book of Haiku poetry but on an unusual subject – housework, its delights and annoyances.

The poetry follows the usual outline of Haiku, a format that encourages refined use of language and imagery. In a style that is intensely sensual, I describe daily chores, with some slightly unexpected responses. The poetry is highlighted by delightful colour and line drawings by John Helle-Neilsen, an Auckland artist.

Auckland composer, William Green, has set some of the verses to music in “the Ladies’ Home Haiku Song Cycle” – a truly quirky but lyrical setting which was much enjoyed at a lunchtime concert at the Nelson Centre for Musical Arts in June 2021. Recording will take place in the New Year, Covid permitting.
